I used to submit a letter to the editor every once in a while to my hometown newspapers, the Richmond Times Dispatch and the Richmond News Leader, the latter a defunct afternoon paper. I haven't done it as often since I moved to Durham, North Carolina over twenty years ago. I really became disillusioned and believed that the editors of the papers in Richmond controlled the views expressed by selection, placement and editing.

Blogs, on the other hand, are not subject to editing by others and therefore, responsibility for the ideas and views is totally my own. If I seem silly, naive or stupid, it is my own fault, not some anonymous editor. The challenge, obviously, is to find an audience, and I hope to be able to do that with some further exploration of the blogging phenomenon.

This is my first attempt at blogging. I hope it will be fun, interesting, and maybe, someday, be a worthy public service.
